Understanding Goaltending Reviews: Arizona vs. UCLA

This training video focuses on the intricacies of reviewing goaltending calls in basketball, particularly during the last two minutes of regulation. The play review outlines the conditions under which goaltending can be reviewed, emphasizing the importance of timing and possession. It explains that if the event occurred within the last two minutes, it is automatically reviewable, whereas outside this time frame requires a coach's challenge. Key points include determining possession at the time of the whistle and the implications of an inadvertent whistle. The video reinforces the procedural steps officials must take, such as resetting the shot clock and game clock based on the goaltending violation's occurrence rather than the official's signal.

Play BreakDown

Arizona UCLA Goal Tend: This is a reviewable play since we have a called goaltending in the last 2 minutes of regulation. If this occurred outside of the last two minutes, the coach would have to use a challenge. At the monitor, we would decide this is legal play because the ball comes off the rim and has no chance of entering the basket. Our next decision is to see if there is possesion when our whistle occurs. If there is no possession, we will go to the AP Arrow. If there is possesion at the time of the whistle, the team with possession will keep the ball with no change of shot clock. Remember that an incorrect goaltending call is an inadvertent whistle, and any time there is an inadvertent whistle with no team control, if the offense retains possession we would set the shot clock to 20 seconds. We will put time on the game clock as to when we β€œthought” the goaltending violation occured, not when the referee signaled or blew his whistle.
