Mastering the High Screen and Roll: Officiating Insights

This training video emphasizes the critical importance of staying focused on primary responsibilities during high screen and roll plays, which are prevalent in basketball. It illustrates how both the Lead and Center officials should maintain clear sightlines to effectively officiate these complex situations. The video stresses the need for a patient whistle, particularly from the Trail and Center referees, when secondary defenders enter the paint. It highlights a scenario where a secondary defender, initially in the Center's primary area, moves into the Lead's primary just as contact occurs. The training encourages officials to allow the Lead to make the initial call, while also providing guidance on how to intervene appropriately if significant contact is missed. This approach fosters better communication and decision-making among officials, ultimately enhancing game management.

Play BreakDown

High screen and roll plays happen almost every possession so staying focused on our primary and trusting the system is important on many levels. On this play a secondary defender moves into the lane to help defend the play. Both the Lead and the Center have outstanding looks at this play. Having a patient whistle from Trail and Center on plays that involve secondary defenders in the paint is imperative. Although the secondary defender comes from the Centers primary he ends up in the Leads primary when contact occurs. We want to allow the Lead to referee their primary and make a decision. If for some reason they don’t blow the whistle and you believe that too much contact took place and it's best for the game to have a whistle then you can come in and make a decision on the play.
