Play #5 Gonzaga vs UCLA Cylinder Foul / Elbow
Stop the clip from the corner camera angle and the game clock showing 17:40
Recognize that the defense is playing a 1-3-1 zone
As the ball enters the post the Lead is moving to put himself in the best position to see the play
The contact that is created by the elbow of the offensive player to the face of the defensive player stands out as the obvious play but as the corner and especially the baseline cameras show this is actually a defensive cylinder foul as the defense illegally moves forward into the offensive player as he is making a legal basketball move.
A couple teaching points. Know that this is a reviewable play. When there is a foul called for swinging of the elbows involving the cylinder rule or a hook and hold play, the officials may review the play and adjudicate all penalties by removing fouls, assessing fouls against any player or concluding that no foul(s) occurred. On this play, after a monitor review, the offensive foul can be removed and a defensive cylinder foul can be applied.
