Navigating Last Second Plays: Center's Role and Monitor Review

This training video focuses on the critical role of the Center official during last second plays in basketball. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining a good position to observe the play and the necessity for all officials to be engaged in decision-making, especially in high-stakes moments. The video details the process of using the monitor to review fouls and the timing of free throws, highlighting how to correctly determine when contact occurs in relation to the game clock. Officials learn the distinction between contact occurring before and after a shot release, which crucially affects the outcome of the game. Understanding these nuances is vital for accurate officiating and game management.

Play BreakDown

The Center position is in a great spot on the floor to see this last second play, remember we never want to walk ourselves out of a good look. With the game on the line, everyone must have an opinion. The trail should be ready to assist if the Center doesnโ€™t have a whistle here. The crew is now going to the monitor to see what time should be on the clock for the three free throws. At the monitor, the crew determined that 0.1 on the clock was when the defender Purple #3 makes contact with the shooter White #22. Since the clock ran to zeros, we are going to put time back on the clock as to when the contact occurred. If the game clock did not run to zeros, we would put time back on the clock as to when we blow our whistle/fist starts to go up in the air. Itโ€™s very important to understand the difference. If the crew determined that the foul occurred after the release of the ball, with no time left on the clock, White #22 would shoot three free throws with the lane cleared to determine the outcome of the game. If at the monitor, the crew sees that White #22 completely returned to the floor with both feet, and then contact occurs with no time left on the clock, we would take away the foul since he is no longer an airborne shooter, and the game would be over.
