Drive Mechanics and Processing Goaltending
This training clip focuses on crew movement and focus during a rapid diagonal drive to the basket. We begin by analyzing the initial setup at the 18:58 mark, where the Trail official must manage the ball while anticipating an on-ball screen that never fully materializes. As the drive develops, we highlight the Center’s crucial responsibility to adjust their position to maintain a "dependable" and open look at the rim. Because there are no secondary competitive matchups, the Center is in a prime position to assist on the play. This sequence culminates in a defensive goaltending call, serving as a reminder that officials must remain on high alert and "work the system" as primaries shift in a matter of seconds.
Play BreakDown
Stop the clock at 18:58 and look at the crews initial setup. Ball is in Trails primary and the initial thought of the play is that there will be an on ball screen which doesn’t materialize. The thought of a ball screen causes the delay of the defender which allows a diagonal drive to the basket.
On the drive, we have the T maintaining an open look and we also have the C position adjusting to stay in a dependable position. With no other competitive match ups during the drive, the C is able to keep an open look and have an opinion on the play. The result of the play is a defensive goaltending. These plays happen fast and we have to stay alert and be able to process these plays.
Take Aways:
- Dependable positions are a must
- Stay alert at the C position
- Work the system as primary’s change in seconds
